The SunClad USA Comfort-Tilt is Sun's basic grade double hung window. It features the standard double hung sash-over-sash design, where both sashes open for ventilation and tilt-in for easy cleaning of the exterior glass surfaces from within the building. Sun's innovative combination of positive contact floating jamb liners with finger release tilt-sash operation provides excellent weather seal performance along with easy tilting sashes. Sash operation is achieved with sash locks and finger release hardware recess mounted on the plain profiled sash lock rail. The window interior features clear ponderosa pine that is suitable for a natural (clear) finish, staining or painting. The sash profile is kept narrow to maximize the daylight opening.

Our SunClad exterior uses heavy-gauge extruded aluminum for strength, durability and resistance to weather and abuse. It is coated with a highly durable, baked on Powder Coat finish that meets AAMA 2604 standards. The coating is available in 11 Standard colors, 26 Feature finishes and several Metallic and Anodic finishes. Custom color matching is also available. All SunClad products are designed with a fail-safe Water Management System. The exterior perimeter of the glass is sealed against water intrusion. However, if that seal should ever fail, our Water Management system provides an effective drain path (to the exterior) for water to exit the glazing channel and sash structure. This helps protect the insulated glass against seal failure and the wood interior of the window against deterioration. The exterior frame includes Sun's integral nail fin for stable installation and our accessory groove that allows for the application of various exterior trim options, including clad brick mold, wide trim profiles and more.

Grille systems are available in a range of styles, sizes and patterns for visually dividing the glass area and providing a decorative design accent. This includes Sun's Simulated Divided Lite (SDL), Interior Wood Grille and GBGs (grilles between the glass). Exterior mounted screens featuring BetterVue™ screen mesh are available.

As with all SunClad products, the USA Double Hung family is designed and built to provide superior energy saving performance. Complete weather-stripping and secure sash closure provide an air-tight seal. Select one of our climate-targeted, Low-E insulated glass configurations to take advantage of Sun's best energy performance combination for your region. All Sun IG units use the Duralite™ warm-edge spacer system, a non-metallic spacer that provides the lowest thermal conductivity and best gas retention of any IG spacer system.

SunClad USA windows are covered by our extensive warranty and are hand crafted to provide you with high quality, dependable windows that will serve you and your home for many years.

Operation
Double Hung Operation

SunClad™ Double Hung Operation

SunClad™ Double Hungs feature a sash-over-sash design where both sashes raise and lower for ventilation purposes. Both sashes will tilt inward for easy access to the exterior glass surfaces from inside the room. This can make it easier to clean your windows. The bottom sash tilts in by activating the finger release latches and pulling the top of the sash toward you. The top sash does not have tilt latches, it will simply pull toward you. The positive contact floating jamb liners maintain constant pressure against the sides of the sashes. This acts as an air and weather seal as well as helps in the vertical operation of the sashes. The jamb liners also house the spring balance system. The tilting action of the sashes is achieved by the combination of a pair sash pins, located near the bottom of each side of the sash, and a pair of balance shoes located in the jamb liners. The balance shoes feature a locking action that supplies tension within the jamb liner track when the sash is tilted 90°. This feature is useful to help prevent the bottom of the sash from moving up or down while the sash is tilted for cleaning. It will also hold the shoes and springs in position when you choose to remove the sash completely from the window. Tilting and sash removal instructions are available under the Technical section.

Exterior
Sun Clad Extruded Aluminum Exterior

SunClad™ Extruded Aluminum Exterior

SunClad™ is the name we give our heavy-gauge extruded aluminum exterior on our clad-wood products. Aluminum is highly resistant to the effects of weather. It does not rust like other metal. It does not rot or decay, warp or distort like wood. It does not break down chemically over time like vinyl or fiberglass. Our heavy gauge extruded aluminum will not easily dent like Roll Form aluminum wrapped over a wood sash exterior. It provides exceptional strength and long life for the product and it is the perfect surface for our High Durability Powder Coat Finish.

• Superior Strength - for the frame and sash
• More Durable - protects interior wood components
• Protects the Home better
• Fail-Safe Water Management System - weeps water from frame and sash components
• Integral Nailing Fin - permanent fin is part of the frame
• High-Durability Powder Coat Factory Finish

Nailing Fin
Integral Nail Fin

Integral Nail Fin

SunClad™ products are designed with a rigid nail fin that is formed as an integral part of the exterior frame extrusion. This provides for a very strong and stable installation. The nail fin can be scored and removed for mulling and retro-fit applications.

Fail-Safe Water Management System
Water Management System

Fail-Safe Water Management System

All SunClad products are designed with a Fail-Safe Water Management System. The exterior perimeter of the glass is sealed against water intrusion. However, because aluminum, glass and wood all expand and contract at different rates, we design our Fail-Safe Water Management System to provide an effective drain path (to the exterior) for water to exit the glazing channel and sash structure. This prevents water or moisture from becoming trapped within the sash, which helps protect the insulated glass against seal failure and the wood interior of the window against deterioration.

Exposed Exterior Jamb Liner Edge
Exposed Jamb Liner

Double Hung Exposed Jamb Liner

The SunClad™ Comfort-Tilt Double Hung window as well as the Easy-Tilt 3-1/8" Replacement frame features an exterior frame that does not conceal the outer face or edge of the vinyl jamb liners. This outer edge or face is visible against the window frame and the sash. While this does not hinder the functionality of the window, certain exterior window colors may make this more noticeable. Our upper grade Easy-Tilt Double Hung has a frame that conceals this part of the vinyl jamb liner.

Powder Coat Finish
Powder Coat

High Durability Powder Coat Finish

Sun uses high durability powder coating as the exterior finish of our SunClad products. It is tougher than conventional painted finishes. The powder is electrostatically applied to aluminum extrusions that have been washed and prepared in a multi-stage pre-treatment process. The applied powder is baked on to the extrusion which is ready for production shortly after leaving the oven. Our standard finish meets AAMA 2604 requirements and allows us to provide a 20 year warranty against peeling, flaking, blistering, cracking, checking and loss of adhesion and a 10 year warranty against chalking and color change. An optional AAMA 2605 finish is also available and offers a 30/15 year warranty respectively. Sun offers 11 Standard Colors, 26 Feature Colors, 15 Metallic Finishes and 6 Anodic Finishes. Additionally, virtually any color you want is available through Custom Color Matching. Sun's Powder Coating is also very environmentally friendly, with no VOCs and no lead or chromium in any of the processes.

Configurations
Double Hung Configurations

SunClad™ Double Hung Configurations

SunClad™ Double Hung windows are available as single units or in mulled units up to 5 units wide. Individual units can be standard double hung style or as unequal sash height units known as Oriel and Cottage styles. An Oriel window has a bottom sash that is shorter in height than the top sash. A Cottage window is the opposite, with a bottom sash that is taller than the top sash. In each case, the sash height relationship is about 40% / 60%.

Double Hung Configuration Styles

Any combination of operating and fixed units can be joined into a mulled unit. Example: you can order a 3 window unit with a center fixed lite and a double hung on both sides. The individual units can be the same width or different widths. The main restriction is that the overall combined unit width cannot exceed 12' and the height cannot exceed 8'. Larger combinations may be mulled on site. Please note that mulled units are not designed to take the place of structural framing. In some instances it is better to order your units "aligned" but not mulled. This means that they will be built with the proper grille alignment to be installed beside or above each other, but the wall will have structural framing separating the units into smaller combinations or single units. More information on combination units is available under Mulls and Mulling.

Window Opeining Control Device
Window Opening Control Device - Double Hung

Window Opening Control Device - Clad Double Hung

SunClad™ USA Double Hungs have the option of having the sash opening limited by our Window Opening Control Device, also referred to as a WOCD. The device automatically limits the opening of the sash to a narrow opening, but it can also be by-passed or disengaged by an adult when more opening is wanted or needed.

Operation
1. The device is automatically set to limit the sash operation unless it deactivated by someone wishing to open the window. Open the sash and the WOCD stops it at the limited height.
2. To by-pass the limit, press the WOCD limiter inward. It is spring-loaded and part of the tab will protrude out from the surface of the device even in the by-pass position. Raise the sash upward and it will now continue past the limiter. Raise to desired height.
3. Closing the sash automatically re-activates the limiter.

Colors / Finishes
The WOCD is available in White or Brushed Nickel finishes. It is visible on the face of the side rail of the top sash.

SDL
SDL or Simulated Divided Lite, is an aluminum grille bar permanently applied to the exterior glass surface and a wood grille permanently applied to the interior glass surface. A black shadow bar is sealed between the glass. This simulates old divided lite windows without sacrificing the benefits of a single insulated glass unit. Available in 5/8", 1" , 1-1/4" and 2-1/4" (simulated mull) wide profiles.

SCR
Simulated Check Rail is a variation of our SDL using a wide 2-1/4" bar horizontally across a Casement or Fixed Lite window to simulate the look of a Double Hung window.

SM
Simulated Mull is another variation of our SDL using a wide 2-1/4" bar vertically. One or two of these can be placed in the center of a wide Casement or Fixed Lite to simulate the look of two windows joined together or two sashes side by side.

Wood Grille (Push-Pin style)
This removable wood grille mounts to the window interior. Grille clips with push-pin points slide in notches at the end of each grille bar to fasten the grille to the window. Removing the grille makes it easier to clean the glass. Wood grilles are available in 1" and 1-1/4" wide profiles.

Wood Grille (Surround style)
Also available is a wood surround grille that has wood frame around the perimeter of the grille. This inserts into the daylight opening of the sash and is held in place by an anchor pin.

GBG
GBG (Grilles Between Glass) are 3/4" contoured profiled aluminum grilles sealed within the insulated glass unit for no-maintenance convenience. Available in White, Vanilla, Beige, Sand, Bronze, Black, Green and Red colors. They are also available in two color combinations (one color facing the interior the other facing the exterior) of White/Sand and White/Bronze.

Product Combinations
SunClad™ products can be combined with companion products to form special feature windows or window and door combinations. SunClad™ products are designed so that they can be easily grouped together to form multi-unit configurations. These configurations can be as simple as combining two units together, side by side, to form a 2-wide unit, or as complex as combining multiple units of various styles and shapes to form a special feature window wall. Send us your ideas and we will help you configure your special combination.

Mulled Unit Dimensions
When mulling SunClad products together, the over-all unit size can be determined by adding the product unit sizes together. For combinations of 3 units or more, an incidental gain may occur. Increase the Rough Opening dimension by 1/8" for 3 units or 3/16" for four units.

Mulled Unit Restrictions
The maximum over-all size for a factory mulled unit cannot exceed 12' by 8' (vertical or horizontal).
Maximum units wide = 5

Egress Codes

Egress codes exist to provide emergency access to living areas of the home. These standards establish minimum requirements for windows used in bedrooms and basements with habitable space. At least one egress qualifying window or door is required in these rooms. If the room has a door to the outside, then this covers the requirements. If it doesn't, then at least one window must meet the code requirements.

Code requirements vary, depending on where you live. You must check with your local code officials to determine your specific requirements. There several code standards that are typically adopted, but the final authority exists with your local officials.

To help you select windows that potentially qualify, Sun has created an Egress ID system for our Casement and Double Hung windows. Please note that the window opening must be unobstructed, therefore Awning windows do not qualify. We base this on one of the typical, national standards, BOCA: The National Building Code. These standards happen to match many of the other code standards, but some do vary in some of the specifications.

Again, please check with your local code officials.

BOCA: The National Building Code, Chapter 10, Section 1010.4 (2006)

Maximum sill height above the floor = 44"
Minimum net clear opening width = 20"
Minimum net clear opening height = 24"
Minimum net clear opening square feet = 5.7
Exception - Grade level windows - minimum net clear opening square feet = 5.0

Energy Performance
Energy Peformance

Energy Performance

Energy Performance is reported as a group of values designated the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) to provide meaningful, comparative data for windows, doors and skylights. The NFRC has determined that these values represent the key energy performance factors when measured and reported in a standardized method.

These values are:
• U-Value
• Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
• Visible Light Transmittance (VLT)
• Condensation Resistance (CR)
• Air Leakage or Air Infiltration

U-values and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient are used by the EnergyStar™ Certification Program to rate windows and door products as Energy Efficient. Additional factors, especially the Air Leakage or Air Infiltration rating, are critical in the overall, actual energy peformance of the installed product.
